Keep Away Mosquitoes and Ticks–The Natural Way!

Our planet is an amazing place. Nature gives us so much wonder–it even gives us natural bug repellents that look good and smell great! Some plants that help repel mosquitoes are …

Marigolds: a nice plant to have in outdoor areas that you spend a lot of time in not only are they pretty, but they also have a scent that repels mosquitoes.

Citronella: a very commonly known mosquito repellent that will grow 5 to 6 feet in large pots or in the ground.

Catnip: this is an herb that is easy to grow—and it may attract some cats!

Lavender: a favorite scent among many humans and used to help relaxation, but mosquitoes and gnats do not enjoy this plant.

Lemon balm: while repelling mosquitoes it also attracts bees and butterflies to pollinate your garden. Best planted in a pot, so it doesn’t take over your lawn!

Also always keep an eye on any standing water and try to get rid of that before it becomes a hot spot for mosquitoes to multiply!

Let’s also talk about ticks, a tiny pest that can cause a big headache with just one bite. As a dog parent, I’ve always been on the look out for these little critters. Dogs have a preventative medication which we as humans don’t so we just try to avoid them the best we can! Some plants that may help keep them away include…

Garlic: which can help keep many pests away if planted in your garden.

Mint: deters ticks along with fleas and other insects and provides a nice scent to us humans.

Rosemary, Chrysanthemums, Marigolds also help keep ticks away due to ticks not liking the smell.

However, the best way to keep ticks out of your yard is to keep your lawn tidy and be cautious of any wooded areas you have nearby. Also, be careful to not attract wild animals into your yard. As excited as we all get to see a deer out our window, unfortunately deer (as well as other animals) carry ticks into our property.
